Abstract

Despite affecting a large population, treatment for thumb joint arthritis often falls short, and lacks a variety of reliable options. This study examines a modified variation of a standard arthroplasty procedure (ligament reconstruction and tendon interposition) developed by Dr. Brian Janz (Hand and Upper Extremities Surgeon). A lab was conducted on a cadaveric hand to examine and document the procedure. Patients who have received the procedure were surveyed to assess the outcome of their treatment. Overwhelmingly patients' scores significantly increased, three months post-operatively compared to before the procedure. The procedure was found to be highly effective in reducing patients' pain and improving their ability to complete simple day to day tasks. With a high success rate, and patient satisfaction, there is a wide application for this procedure, and it could be easily implemented as a common treatment route.
